Oh My Gluten Free, is what the title of this story translates to, in case you were confused! "Why is The Food Pervert writing about a gluten-free bakery? Isn't she supposed to be eating all the good stuff?!" Here's the thing, my body feels BETTER when I'm not eating gluten everyday. I know how good gluten filled foods taste, but they aren't always the best things for you to eat! I don't believe I have an allergy to gluten, but from articles I've been reading it's a known fact that gluten contributes to inflamation and digestion problems. I will never be able to give up donuts and real pizza crust, but I do think it's good to cut back on them! And guess what?! I did some research and found amazing gluten-free bread at Rising Hearts Bakery in Culver City.
A few weeks ago I picked up a sandwich at Mendocino Farms, the downtown location. I opted for the gluten-free bread to enjoy my sandwich on. It was delicious, slightly sweet but still had a grainy-bread quality. I was amazed it was gluten-free! It tasted so much better than what I had been buying at the store for my home!
The next thing to do, was to find out where they got this bread and if I could buy it from them. Turns out Mendocino Farms does not sell the bread in their sandwich shops by the loaf, but the bakery they get it from does! I found out that Rising Hearts Bakery in Culver City is the maker of this fantastic gluten-free bread!
Of course I ended up at the bakery ready to drop serious dough...on gluten-free dough! The bakery itself is humble and modest, a small storefront that reminds you of your hometown bakery. I was impressed to find more than gluten-free bread; there were gluten-free cookies, cupcakes, and even whoopie pies! It took me awhile to go through all of the various breads on display: Bagels, Baguettes, Challah Rolls, Focaccia, Brioche, you get it. Basically, every kind of bread you would want, they had a gluten-free version of it. Nearly all of the loaves are dairy-free as well, if that's something you look for in bread!
The one bread I needed to find was the magical loaf used at Mendocino Farms! I asked the nice girl at the counter which one it was. She sweetly pointed and said, "The Millet Loaf." YES! The Millet Loaf!
I considered my first visit to Rising Hearts a success, leaving with a Sorghum Baguette and Millet Loaf in my bag. I couldn't wait to get home to eat them!
I sliced off a piece of the baguette immediately when I walked through my apartment door. WHAT? It blew my mind it was so good! The texture, the taste, it didn't remind me of any gluten-free bread I ever had. I didn't even heat it up first, it was delicious, cool and fresh from the bag. I smeared cream cheese on my second bite, perfection.
I went back last week to get the Rosemary Loaf, yep, as incredible as it sounds! That's the one in the top picture!
All I have to say is that Rising Hearts gluten-free bread will be taking up a permanent residency in my freezer! (Keeping gluten free bread in the freezer keeps it from spoiling too soon).
Gluten Lovers and Gluten Haters, you will both love this bakery! Please check them out at www.risingheartsbakery.com.
